The Genius Plugin plugin uses “calendars” to allow you to customize and display listings of your events anywhere on your site. Calendars are a collection of your events, which can then be customized to be displayed in either a calendar month view, a list view, or a grid view. They can be configured to include or exclude events based on categories or tags.

Creating a Calendar

When you create a calendar, you can use the customization settings to choose which events should be displayed in it. You can create as many calendars as you like, and customize each of them to be displayed in different ways.

To create a calendar:

1. Go to Events > All Events > Calendars.

2. Click “Add New” at the top to create a new calendar.

3. By default, the calendar will include all of your events. You can embed it anywhere on your site by clicking the “Embed” button and using the shortcode in any page, post, or widget that supports them.

The shortcode should look like this:

[event_genius_calendar id="1"]

Customizing a Calendar

Click “Edit” at the top of the calendar to customize it.

The “Events” tab shows all events which are currently included. By default, this will be all of your events. To customize your calendar, click on the “Settings” tab.

Calendar Name and Identity Color

These won’t be displayed to users anywhere on the front end of your site, but are just to help you identify and manage your calendars on your Calendars page.

Event Filters

Event Filters control which types of events are displayed in your calendar. Follow the steps below to create a filter:

1. Click “Create Filter”

2. Select what type of filter you want to create. This determines whether the filter displays or hides events based on either their category or a tag.

3. Select a category or tag from the dropdown list, and then choose whether to include events based on it, or to exclude those events.

4. Click “Add” to create your filter.

5. To preview how this filter affects what is shown in your calendar, you can either view the calendar in the “Preview” section, or if you click “Save Calendar” then you can also view the “Events” tab under the calendar name to see an updated list of events in this calendar.

6. To remove a filter, simply click the “x” next to it.

7. Use the “Filter Relationship” setting to determine how the filters should behave. The “AND” option will display only events which match ALL of the filters combined, and the “OR” option will display any event which matches ANY ONE of the filters.

View Type

You can change the default view of your calendar to be either a Month view (default), a List view, or a Grid View.

Month View – This displays your events in a calendar month view, showing events overlaid on specific dates.

List View – This displays your events in a vertical list view, one below the other.

Grid View – This displays your events in columns like a grid. The number of columns will change depending on the width of the calendar.

Each of these views will adapt to the screen size of the page to allow it to be flexible enough to be viewed on any type of device or be displayed in any width of container on your page.

Events Per Page

This only affects the List view and Grid view. It determines how many events to display on each page of events before adding pagination.

Toolbar

This allows you to toggle on or off the toolbar shown at the top of a calendar.

Once you are done customizing your calendar, click “Save Calendar” at the bottom.

Displaying a Calendar

Once you are finished customizing your calendar, there are two easy ways to display it; using the calendar shortcode, or using the built-in block.

Shortcode

To find the correct shortcode for your calendar, click the “Embed Calendar” button in the top right of the calendar editor page.

Then copy the calendar shortcode. It will look like this:

[event_genius_calendar id="1"]

Paste this into any area of your site which supports shortcode (eg. a post, page, block, or widget). If the shortcode displays as plain text on your site, then this indicates that wherever you pasted the it doesn’t support shortcodes.

Block

To use the block:

1. Go to your page editor. Note: If you have the “Classic Editor” plugin enabled then blocks won’t work and you will need to use the shortcode method instead.

2. Click the “+” symbol in the top left corner.

3. Search for “event calendar” and select the “Event Calendar” block.

4. The block has now been added to your page. The block is selected by default and so the block options should appear in the right column of the page under “Block“.

5. Use the “Select Calendar” dropdown to choose which calendar you want to display.
